Competition: The Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial Competiton Edition#3
Organizer: Buildner Architecture Competitions
How would you design a memorial in a nuclear bomb decommissioned site in a hypothetical future scenario?
Answering this question, I opt to design a memorial that ensures and reassures the last bomb was used here. It is here to leave a message to the future generation by means of a visual indicator and clues of the sheer power and scale of destruction possessed within an atomic bomb.
I took a different approach compared to the majority of the previous proposal of this competition that goes to design the memorial from the crater perimeter inward. Here, I design the space outward from the blast zone to make sure the true size and looks of the blast zone, all its wrinkles, dust, and burn marks stays intact. Outside the blast zone, I create a plan of a city, complete with all its roads, parks, and grids, but minus the building, so what is left is the substructure, the empty lot, and the empty streets. This was done to symbolize the effect of an explosion that flattened everything in its perimeter down to the dust, and rendering the place empty, hence where its name comes from.
If you notice closely, there is no use of text or annotations within the presentation board as it is a response toward the global silence surrounding the nuclear weapon disarmament. This criteria is hoped to raise more awareness toward this topic as we continue to march towards nuclear-weapon free tomorrow.
