Jeremy Bentham’s primary aim with the Panopticon was to establish a mechanism for effective and orderly management within institutions, notably prisons, through continuous and inconspicuous monitoring. This design’s adaptability facilitated its potential utilization in various settings requiring surveillance.
Memoria, drawing inspiration from the Panopticon design, is a dementia care community. Dementia encompasses symptoms impacting memory, cognition, and daily function, for which there’s no cure. With the aging population, dementia cases rise, necessitating research and care facilities. Memoria caters specifically to dementia patients, offering safe, comfortable spaces tailored to their needs. It aims to create a homelike community conducive to well-being, fostering familiarity and comfort.
Memoria encompasses a medical centre, research hub, and caregiver training facility alongside residences, park, livelihood, commercial, and entertainment zones. Its architecture facilitates easy navigation and promotes an active lifestyle. The Panopticon-inspired design allows for unobtrusive observation of dementia patients, enabling staff to monitor and study them discreetly from a central tower, fostering residents’ independence and sense of privacy.
Memoria cultivates a community atmosphere where inhabitants can interact, partake in activities, and connect with others. The environments are crafted to evoke reminiscence and foster independence, while also ensuring residents’ ongoing monitoring, care, and safety.
