The Neptune Institute aims to give voice to some of the key issues currently faced by Venice, articulating these issues through an active public collaboration aimed to present open marine data through digital art instillations. This project serves to highlight the region’s heavy tourism and its effects on underwater ecosystems, using open-source data of regional footfall and lagoon marine life to inspire digital artworks in the exhibition space.
This exhibition is designed to showcase the principles and ideas behind the Neptune Institute as a collaborative, interdisciplinary endeavour between scientific data and artistic interpretation.
A physical model of the marine institute would be located at centre of the exhibition, with digital interactive stations located throughout the pavilion. These will invite visitors to take part in producing their own artistic visual interpretations of this marine data creatively.
The collection of work produced by visitors will be shown throughout the exhibition on multiple screens, mimicking what would have been shown in the Neptune Institute’s ‘pods’. This exhibition will produce collaborative digital art which will grow and evolve throughout the duration of the Biennale. The greater the number of visitors, the larger the digital artistic ‘footprint’: the art will vary, grow, raise awareness of the cumulative effects of visiting tourists and display how visitors view the marine status of the lagoon. Two large screens within the pavilion will also feature the referenced videos in the entry board, providing context behind the idea of the project.
Jury Comments
– [Hamidreza Khademi] Interesting blend of scientific data and artistic interpretation. Technically feasible with the use of digital stations. The main challenge is creating an engaging interface for visitors to produce artistic interpretations of marine data.
– [Nichola V. Barrington-Leach] Good intentions to discuss the need for environmental awareness.
– [Olli Andrew] Great idea, good presentation, taking on one venices biggest issues while giving it a future, inspired.
