Concept: Scientific Tourism Retreat Center on Antipodes Island

The project envisions a unique retreat center on Antipodes Island, where scientific research and restorative retreat coexist in harmony with nature.

A network of research trails, inspired by the intricate patterns of fungal mycelium, forms the structural backbone of the island. These trails weave through the terrain, connecting key observation points and natural treasures, while along their paths lie rest stations, observation decks, bridges, and modest facilities that support the rhythm of immersive exploration.

The centerpiece of the retreat is a vertical modular metal structure rising above the ocean, serving both as a landmark and a central scientific hub. It combines the functions of laboratories and a sanctuary for restoration: inside, laboratories, a library and reading area, a dining hall, and a sauna provide spaces where researcher-explorers can work, reflect, and rejuvenate. Autonomous living modules are installed on cantilevered extensions of the vertical frame, with their number adaptable over time according to changing needs.

For more secluded accommodation, there is a single hermit house offering a minimalist yet functional space for overnight stays, focused work, and prolonged observation of the islandโ€™s flora and fauna.

Jury Comments

This design proposal harmonizes scientific research with restorative retreat. The mycelium-inspired trail network enhances exploration while minimizing impact. Overall speaking it respond to the context in a sensitive way.

Interesting occupation of the space beyond the very architectural volume. The displacement is, on the other hand, also more impactful and costly.

original idea – vertical tower from sea level – limited detail
