Bio-charged Communities addresses an innovative solution to the energy crisis in Juanchaco, a small coastal town in the Colombian Pacific that lacks reliable power supply. This initiative focuses on alternative energy production using microbial cells, algae and kinetic energy as resources. With these inputs, the landscapes created will impact the site visually and functionally.
The first landscape is a set of devices made of woven fibers, with lichen-inspired structure. It is capable of capturing energy through the vibration generated by rain and wind due to its strategic location on the coastal cliff.
The second landscape is a series of wetlands, with a morphological design reminiscent of algae cells, meant for phytoremediation and energy harvesting through microbial fuel cells taking advantage of organic matter decomposition.
At last, but not least, the third landscape is a complex network of floating capsule modules which contain microalgae for its breeding and subsequent degradation into biogas. Each capsule’s shell works as a biotope for local fauna. Its bottom, made of biorock, will eventually mimic a coral environment.
These three interconnected elements form a self-regenerative system that contributes to the resilience and development of the community, integrating nature and technology in a symbiotic and restorative way.
