“Meta” means “beyond” and “towards” means “universe”. So we get “beyond the universe” or “parallel universe”. The metaverse is a virtual world in 3d, in which it is possible to move around and interact thanks to the Internet. The term was brought back into the spotlight in 2021 by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, announcing that the company was changing its name to “Meta” and thus promoting access to these virtual spaces, accessible via augmented reality glasses.

The metaverse promises a space whose possibilities surpass those of real life. The architectural follies of the 20th century would become achievable without any structural effort. The metaverse would obey no laws of physics, least of all gravity. It would be an infinite space, with interlocking worlds and a multitude of gravities.
