After being overhunted, humpback whales are now a recovering species. Therefore, monitoring them has become a critical activity for all countries that are part of their migratory path. Yubarta Light Islets is a project dedicated to the different forms of life found in the verticality of a marine ecosystem. In the depths of the sea, a whale monitoring system has been designed that allows the songs of these giants to be heard within a radius of 1.3 km. Monitoring them allows us to determine the size of their population, their reproductive success and the threats they face, such as pollution, climate change and fishing. As they are an ecotourism attraction, tracking them also helps to promote sustainable tourism. As they migrate, monitoring their routes provides important information on the impact of climate change on the oceans.
Level 0 develops a space for human habitation in the middle of the sea, designed as a refuge for the fishermen’s long days. A fishermen’s passage house provides a safe and comfortable place to rest after long days of fishing or adverse weather conditions, at higher elevations, a mouldable biotype is developed for seabirds, and artificial marine biofouling structures are submerged in the depths of the sea to encourage the growth of local marine species. These facilities also help to preserve coastal ecosystems by preventing fishermen from camping in sensitive areas and reducing the accumulation of waste. Designed according to sustainable principles, these refuges can minimise their environmental impact and protect the natural environment.
