The colosseum in Rome embodied the history and heritage of the city for two millennia. From the antiquity, to medieval and beyond renaissance, the structure provided different uses to the city, first as a theatre, then as a community of housing and merchant shops. Going into a new age of urbanism in Rome, the Colosseum could once again serve as a vital point to the city.
The suburban sprawl of Rome has exerted an increasing amount of stress to the existing public transport system in the city. The central location of the colosseum and the existing metro station under the site makes the structure suitable to be a transit hub. Cutting across the heavy masonry wall, train tracks and platforms could be laid directly on top of the hypogeum. The elliptical form of the arena directs the focus towards the trains running at the axis of the structure, while movement of passengers can be observed on Timber decks extending from the existing seating levels. Supporting the decks and the translucent roof, the timber structure is built in contrast to the historical masonry walls, creating a dichotomy of old and new.
Jury Comments
– Very realistic representation of maybe the less plausible proposal. We appreciated this provocation, though | FMO
