The project, set in Iloilo, Philippines, aims to enhance the city’s ecological and social networks by expanding movement opportunities, thereby fostering connectivity and biodiversity within the urban ecosystem. It explores the role of food—a vital force that drives movement—through its placement and distribution, which influence daily mobility patterns and reshape urban spaces.
Markets are identified as crucial public spaces that encourage continuous interaction and slower, more deliberate movements, positively impacting their surroundings. As the market expands its influence throughout the city, it transforms urban areas into an integrated market ecosystem where edible plants flourish. Reimagined as a public structure designed for multispecies interactions, the market leverages the spaces between built elements—the voids—as opportunities for organic life to thrive. This vision also includes itinerant street vendors, whose movements embody a form of survival in a capitalist environment, akin to weeds breaking through concrete.
Drawing inspiration from Gilles Clément’s “Garden in Motion,” the project seeks a balance between spontaneous growth and minimal human intervention, transforming vacant spaces into vibrant biodiversity hubs. This approach promotes freer movement for people and organisms alike, turning architecture into a dynamic stage for diverse life forms to coexist, ultimately fostering a healthier, more interconnected urban environment.
