Situated in the extreme, wind-battered environment of the UNESCO-listed Antipodes Island, this proposal rejects the traditional human roles of conqueror or detached observer. Instead, it establishes a “Dialogue with the Island,” positing architecture as a medium for permeating the natural rhythm and existing as a respectful participant.

The design strategy is defined by “Vertical Integration,” where the building’s relationship with the terrain shifts logically as it ascends. The lowest level (1F), “Dialogue of Foundation and Record,” is actively inserted into the earth, providing a secure base for essential utilities and data analysis against harsh conditions. The middle level (2F), “Dialogue of Sharing and Coexistence,” features transparent panoramic glazing to foster social interaction within communal kitchen and observation lounge spaces. The uppermost level (3F), “Dialogue of Reflection,” transitions into introspection; partially buried under an earth-covered roof for geothermal benefits, it offers private shelters and a meditation gallery focused upward through minimalist skylights.

To ensure sustainability in this remote location, the basecamp achieves complete off-grid functionality. It utilizes vertical axis wind turbines to harness powerful westerly winds, employs a robust rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse system, and uses bio-toilets to prevent contamination. Crucially, the structure rests on a minimal contact steel pile foundation, ensuring the preservation of the sensitive ecosystem and preventing soil erosion. This proposal delivers a resilient shelter that listens to, rather than dominates, its environment.

Interesting interaction with the topography. Maybe a bit ambitious the amount of technical facilities.

While not original in terms of architecture (?) it provides a well conceived three level living.
