The design challenges the idea of a transportable home simply as a “house on wheels.” Humans have exercised the skills and strategies necessary to foster self-sufficient and mobile living, which is especially relevant in an era of land scarcity and climate change. Furthermore, the recent COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the boundaries of technological advancement to promote the freedom of movement and broaden means of communication.
The mobile dwelling considers the standard dimensions of a shipping container, followed by lightweight, locally-sourced materials, construction systems (i.e. cross-laminated timber) and energy and water systems to leverage environmental performance and ease of transportation to any location. To optimize floor area, a movable furniture-wall component freely moves from side to side, allowing the inhabitant to customize the spatial layout according to each function. Functional elements such as foldable furniture can be stowed away is unused to accommodate more room for inhabitants and guests.
Additionally, connection with other mobile home dwellers is facilitated by the integration of digital platforms to control home functions and connect them with other dwellers at dedicated sites with shared amenities to convey a boundless sense of community.
