In 1959, people believed that there were oceans on the moon as they observed the photos sent by the exploration robot. One specific area was even named the Sea of Desires. However, there is no water on the moon, and the Sea of Desire was merely an optical illusion caused by low resolution.
Our vision is based on the ambitious journey of designing a lunar habitat reminiscent of the sea. Residential modules will sprawl across the lunar terrain to evoke the fluid expansiveness of the ocean. These modules, designed in the shape of water droplets, will be interconnected by bridges to foster unity and interconnectedness within the lunar habitat. Additionally, we plan to cultivate seaweed on the outer membranes of these modules to serve the practical purpose of blocking solar radiation. To address the harsh environment and ensure sustainability, we will utilize innovative agricultural techniques. CO2 and H2O resources buried underground will be used for cultivation, and essential resources like CH4 and O2 will be synthesized through chemical reactions to provide for residents.Â
Our goal is not only to replicate the past but to make the moon a second habitat for humanity and demonstrate the possibility of lunar habitation.
Jury Comments
– The “Mare Desiderii” project stands out for its clean, clear, and innovative design. I appreciate the use of biomimicry, with residential modules shaped like water droplets to evoke the feeling of an ocean on the lunar surface. The integration of seaweed cultivation for solar radiation protection and the use of underground resources for sustainability are brilliant solutions for adapting to the moon’s harsh environment. | Cas Esbach
