1) Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Lina, a self-motivated architectural designer, holds a Master of Architecture from Syracuse University. With a passion for creating innovative, sustainable, and functional spaces, she has over 5 years of experience working on diverse projects, including K-12, higher education, healthcare, large-scale, mixed-use, and residential developments, both domestically and internationally. Beyond her architectural work, Lina is deeply interested in architectural visualization. She recognizes the power of visualization in effectively communicating design concepts and is committed to exploring new techniques and technologies to enhance the visual representation of her projects.

2) What inspired you for the Meditation Roofs?

The inspiration behind the design for the Meditation Roofs project stemmed from a desire to create a harmonious integration of architecture, nature, and wellness in urban environments. Recognizing the increasing need for tranquil spaces amidst bustling cities, we were inspired to develop a modular system that not only facilitates meditation but also celebrates the connection between humans and nature. The modular system, with its versatile cubes, aims to provide tranquil spaces for meditation while promoting sustainability and community well-being.

3) Can you describe any particular challenges you faced during the design process and how
you overcame them?

During the design process for the Meditation Roofs project, one of the main challenges we encountered was developing different meditation scenarios using the same modular system. The goal was to create diverse configurations that catered to various preferences and needs while maintaining the simplicity and versatility of the Cubic Space. To overcome this challenge, we approached the design process with a focus on flexibility and adaptability. We conducted thorough research on different meditation practices and environments to understand the range of requirements and preferences among users. This helped us brainstorm creative solutions and explore alternative configurations that could accommodate various meditation scenarios.

4) How do you think your educational background or professional experiences influenced your winning design?

My educational background in architecture, particularly my Master of Architecture degree from Syracuse University, provided me with a strong foundation in design principles, sustainability, and innovative techniques. Throughout my studies, I was exposed to various architectural styles and methodologies, which broadened my perspective and inspired me to think creatively. Furthermore, my five years of professional experience have been invaluable. Working on a range of projects honed my ability to adapt to different contexts and requirements, deepening my understanding of client needs and project constraints. These experiences enabled me to integrate practical insights and innovative solutions into my competition entry.

5) What advice would you give to students or young professionals looking to excel in architecture competitions?

Invest time in researching the competition’s theme, requirements, and past winners. Understand the objectives and constraints thoroughly to tailor your design appropriately. Regardless of whether you win or lose, it’s crucial to reflect on your process and outcomes. This reflection allows you to identify areas for growth and improvement, shaping your skills and approach for future competitions.

6) What are your future aspirations in the field of architecture?

In the field of architecture, I aspire to explore sustainable design, embrace innovation, and take on leadership roles in delivering impactful projects. I also aim to contribute to education and mentorship within the profession, nurturing future generations of architects. Ultimately, my goal is to continually evolve and make meaningful contributions to the built environment and communities.
