Lee Tsz Hei Adrian & Maria Jones Delgado: HM of the Himalayan Thermal Bath

+ Lee Tsz Hei Adrian 🇭🇰

+ Maria Jones Delgado 🇬🇧

Honourable Mention of the Himalayan Thermal Bath

1) Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Maria is an Architectural Designer and Researcher, working at the University of Hong Kong. She is Mexican/British and educated in architecture in both London and Hong Kong. Currently working between the lines of archaeology and architecture, she values mapping, hand drawing and making. Adrian is an Architectural Designer at Hassell and a Teaching Assistant at the University of Hong Kong. He studied architecture in Manchester and Hong Kong. Adrian is interested in how Architects in practice can utilize and learn from expressive and experimental methodologies explored in school.

2) What inspired you for the Himalayan Thermal Baths?

Our main inspiration came from a few key references and most importantly local context. Projects such as Alvaro Siza’s Leca Swimming Pool and German del Sol and Carl Gerges’s use of natural materials and immersion in the landscape lead us to look closely at Gosaikunda’s existing baths and the local materials of stone pathways and simple timber constructions. We wanted to maximise the proposal’s integration and minimise the architect’s footprint on the site.

3) Can you describe any particular challenges you faced during the design process and how
you overcame them?

The main challenge was how to represent appropriately such a light intervention onto such a big site. We tried 3D modelling and rendering, but after a while it didn’t seem appropriate to the spirit of our aim, so we decided the use of hand drawing would best represent the use of stones and timber and the passage of time.

4) How do you think your educational background or professional experiences influenced your winning design?

Both of us studied in the UK and Hong Kong for Bachelors and Masters respectively. We were fortunate to have the exposure to a variety of teaching styles and experiences across different courses. As a result I think we value all types of representations and approaches to different scales, and also know the best ways to express and treat each of them.

5) What advice would you give to students or young professionals looking to excel in architecture competitions?

Competitions are a great way to experiment and improve your ability to draw, visualize, and communicate thoughts and ideas, to both the potential reader of the architecture and the peers you work with along the way. We believe that architectural drawing has a similar power to built architecture, in the sense that it captures and documents not only what worked out in the process, but also the difficult decisions, struggles, setbacks, and disagreements that lead to the final piece.

6) What are your future aspirations in the field of architecture?

Both of us love doing drawings, and we would love to integrate drawing practices and methods across projects in our own studios. We also aspire to be engaged in both practice and pedagogy, and inheriting the life-long journey of architects in harmonizing the two. We aspire to constantly make mistakes and learn new things. Architecture is such a deep, rich sea of endless knowledge; being a student never stops.
