1) Could you briefly introduce yourself?
I am Mohammad Reza Asgari, a 29-year-old architect and interior designer. I hold a master’s degree in architecture and have participated in various architectural competitions, winning several accolades. My expertise spans architectural and interior design, with a keen focus on sustainable and innovative solutions. I have enjoyed running my own design studio, where I’ve had the pleasure of leading a talented team to work on exciting projects across Europe and the US, and middle east.
2) What inspired you for the competition?
The inspiration for my design stemmed from the desire to breathe new life into the ancient Colosseum, making it relevant for contemporary and future use. Unlike the Romans, who used the Colosseum for gladiator fights and war simulations, modern society can repurpose it for various activities. My design introduces a modular platform allowing individuals to choose suitable spaces for diverse activities. It also features a vibrant ecosystem, with cells generating clean energy through solar panels and small wind turbines, as well as green areas and vertical farms. The facade, inspired by traditional order, symbolizes the systematic nature of ancient rule, while modern techniques such as rotating, scaling, adding, and removing create a contemporary facade that showcases our time’s liberty.
3) Can you describe any particular challenges you faced during the design process and how
you overcame them?
One of the main challenges was integrating modern, sustainable elements into a historical structure without compromising its integrity. To overcome this, I conducted extensive research on both the historical significance of the Colosseum and modern sustainable technologies. Collaborating with experts in historical preservation and sustainable design helped ensure that the new elements harmoniously blended with the ancient architecture.
4) How do you think your educational background or professional experiences influenced your winning design?
My educational background provided a strong foundation in architectural theory and history, which was crucial for respecting the Colosseum’s heritage. My professional experiences, particularly in managing projects that integrate sustainability and innovation, enabled me to envision and execute a design that balances historical reverence with modern functionality. Leading a design studio also honed my ability to manage complex projects and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
5) What advice would you give to students or young professionals looking to excel in architecture competitions?
My advice is to deeply understand the context and history of the project site, as this forms the basis of a meaningful design. Embrace innovation and sustainability, and don’t be afraid to challenge traditional boundaries. Collaboration is key; work with experts from various fields to enrich your design. Lastly, stay persistent and passionate about your vision, as this will drive you to overcome challenges and achieve excellence.
6) What are your future aspirations in the field of architecture?
I aspire to continue creating designs that harmonize history with innovation, focusing on sustainability and adaptability. I aim to contribute to the transformation of historical structures into vibrant, functional spaces for future generations. Additionally, I hope to mentor young architects and inspire them to pursue bold, innovative projects that push the boundaries of conventional design.
