Jakarta, a bustling metropolis, is suffering from a serious challenge triggered by human activities – the continuous rise in sea level, which threatens the future and safety of the city.
In the face of this crisis, a combination of new materials and algae aims to transform submerged buildings into a new ecological form. When these materials are applied to damaged or soon-to-be-flooded building structures, they dissolve while promoting rapid algae blooms and growth in the surrounding waters.
What’s more, this shift is not simply a matter of replacement or removal, but of constructing a new model of architecture that has never been seen before. In this model, the building is no longer just a space for human habitation, but becomes a bridge connecting human beings with the marine world. The upper level is carefully designed to be suitable for human habitation, while the lower level is a marine ecological zone nurtured by the new materials and algae, providing a haven for many marine organisms to take refuge and reproduce. This not only reflects mankind’s respect for nature and pursuit of harmonious coexistence, but also provides insights for future urban planning and sustainable development.
