I am exploring an urban planning model that can be applied to a large-scale entertainment event. Burning Man is my experimental site. Burning Man’s social patterns are highly “civilized”. At one point, the participants thought that this might be the ultimate state of human society that they could foresee, communal sharing + a high degree of freedom.
As a “Heterotopia” for strangers, Black Rock City should be planned as a heterotopia in the midst of “class-based activities/capitalism”. Everything should be inverted from the heavily class-divided city. In a circular field, a sound source disrupts the usual pattern of sound spreading in concentric circles and fading over distance. Instead, modular steel structures with tensioned fabric are placed strategically across the field.
These structures create an altered sound environment, moving away from the typical centralized sound flow, and offer varied spatial experiences for those in the field. The randomness of the plane and the influence of the shell structure on sound perception create a homogenized experience for people in the space. This reflects the plan’s original intention: Heterotopia, an anti-hierarchy, temporary construction method.
