An oasis seen from far away as we drive through. A mysterious yet intriguing view, becoming pleasant as we approach. Vibrant, lively. Where the hum of engines once filled the air, the whispers of market life now take root. Stalls with fresh harvest, hands exchanging stories over baskets of sun-kissed produce, the scent of earth and tradition mingling with the soft hum of electric energy. Light structures, rise like delicate poppies, sheltering life beneath them. A meeting point- where locals and travellers pause, not just to recharge, but reconnect with each other.
Poppies , the national flower of the Albanian country, reimagines the abandoned gas station as a vibrant local market, rooted in the cultural and economic fabric of suburban Albania. As the world shifts away from fossil fuels, rather than allowing them to fall into despair, Poppies– symbolizing healing, consolation, resurrection and prosperity – embraces their potential as spaces of renewal and economic growth. The intervention retains its function as a refuelling stop, now catering to electric or hybrid vehicles, ensuring relevance in a post-fossil-fuel era. The project champions adaptive reuse, sustainability and social connectivity, turning transition into opportunity and infrastructure into identity.
