Reimagining Fuel Stations: A New Community Hub

With the decline of fossil fuel usage, traditional gas stations will become obsolete. Our project envisions transforming these spaces into vibrant public areas that integrate greenery and social functions into dense urban environments.
Situated on a 59 × 39 × 6 m plot, this former gas station is reimagined as a dynamic urban space. The existing station building is repurposed into a coffee bistro, while the surrounding area is transformed into an inviting public realm. The former vehicle zone gives way to a skatepark, fostering movement, play, and social interaction. The space remains adaptable—capable of accommodating other public functions, such as a pocket park or cultural venue, depending on community needs.
Lush vegetation enhances the microclimate, providing shade and a connection to nature, while dedicated areas for street art celebrate urban creativity. As a symbolic reminder of the site’s past, a preserved fuel dispenser stands as a monument, marking the transition from fossil fuels to a sustainable urban future.
This transformation of underutilized infrastructure into a multifunctional public space demonstrates a flexible, future-proof approach to city-making, turning obsolete sites into thriving community assets.
