My design turns the gas station into a community play station that features meandering play structures. The play station is a daycare center on weekdays and a community center for families with young kids on weekends.
Kids are the main users of this project. The idea takes from the underground gasoline storage tanks and hidden pipes at gas stations and I want to uncover them to manifest the past use of the site.
The pipes become the meandering play structures and walking paths, the tanks become stop/rest nodes along the play routes, and the building that used to be a convenience store becomes a daycare center. The pipes connect the exterior with the daycare center, making the learning experience more exciting and helping stimulate kids’ creativity. Planters carved from tanks are placed next to play structures and plants are watered with stormwater filtered by gravels on the upper level. While the ground level is designed for kids, the upper level features a cafe for parents to rest and chat while being able to watch their kids when they climb out of the upper tubes.
