How Should Gas Stations Be Utilized in a Post-Fossil Fuel Era?
Environmental sustainability has become a critical concern. As fossil fuel-powered vehicles are replaced by electric cars, traditional gas stations will inevitably lose their function. Meanwhile, the demand for green spaces and food security continues to grow. Therefore, we propose transforming existing gas stations into sustainable, expandable modular smart farms.
Traditional gas stations have a distinct layout comprising buildings, canopies, and fuel tanks. From this, we derive a grid or cross-axis structure and reorganize the space into four key zones.
The transformation begins with the existing canopy structure, where solar panels are installed to create an energy hub, while the space beneath serves as a logistics center supporting smart farm operations. Expanding along the grid axis, the second and third zones utilize existing buildings to house hydroponic and aquaponic smart farm greenhouses. The fourth zone is an open green space, designed for rest and community engagement.
Just as gas stations are located wherever roads exist, this model is not confined to specific locations. Through modular expansion, it can be adapted to various environments, forming an interconnected food network hub. By integrating sustainability, agriculture, and community well-being, this proposal reimagines abandoned gas stations as urban green spaces or the foundation for new large-scale sustainable communities, even in remote areas.
