WALK IN THE MEMORY
Typology: Memorial to the victims of nuclear weapons
Location: Pacific central ocean, Enewetak Atoll, testing site
Year: 2023
In remembrance of the silent threat of nuclear bombs, a memorial is proposed inside an abandoned nuclear weapons testing site.Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in the Enetewak Atoll of the Marshall Islands, the project is generated in the concavity of the modern island formed by the explosion of a bomb.
Being an artificial island with the purpose of reconstituting the destroyed section of the island, the idea is that the memorial reaches its true form only through the action of man.
| Phases |
1. The island is untouched (no visitors have passed)
2. Footprints in the sand (many visitors have left on the sand the sign of their passage)
3. The water comes out (several visitors “participated” in the memory)
4. The island is untouched (the memory mark has been erased)
Read the story…
1. Get closer – I am standing on an artificial island in the space where a nuclear bomb was tested.
2. Read the sign – I’ll come up and read the directions.
3. Collect the water – I’ll get a bucket and get some water.
4. Bring the bucket of water – I bring the bucket of water to the top of the hill. The effort of this action refers to the difficulty of remembering the victims.
5. Climb to the top – As I climb to the top I can reflect on the consequences of using nuclear technology.
6. Leave a footprint – Climbing up I leave the sign of my passage.
7. Reached the top – When you get to the top, the island is full of footprints left by the passage of visitors.
8. Towards the water – Towards the water, collected at the base of the hill, inside the well at the top of the island.
9. The water comes out – When enough people have “remembered”, the water will come out by the well flooding the island. Water spreads radially, similar to the nuclear bomb explosion.
10. The footprints are erased – The passage of water erased the footprints, just as the bomb erased the existence of the victims.
