This project challenges traditional exhibitions that curate objects for an admiring public, presenting a sanitized version of human history. Contrary to this, history is often violent and hierarchical. For example, institutions like The Metropolitan Museum embody a colonialist fantasy, suggesting that the world can be neatly cataloged and contained. In reality, every museum piece has been uprooted from its original context, highlighting uncomfortable truths.
Our project proposes a decolonized exhibition, embracing open-to-all events and constructing an architecture of rebellious emancipation. By rejecting the tidy, imperialist narratives, we aim to create a space that reflects the true complexities of history, encouraging critical engagement and dialogue. This decolonized approach will not only showcase the often-overlooked narratives but also engage visitors in a meaningful way, allowing them to question and understand the power dynamics at play. The architecture itself will symbolize rebellion and freedom, creating a transformative experience for all participants. Through this innovative exhibition, we aspire to contribute to a more inclusive and truthful representation of history, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse cultural contexts.
Jury Comments
– [Hamidreza Khademi] Bold concept challenging traditional exhibition norms. Architecturally, creating a space that embodies “rebellious emancipation” presents interesting design challenges. Interactivity could be enhanced to better engage visitors.
– [Nichola V. Barrington-Leach] Good curatorial approach and necessary conversation yet unclear how or where this might be integrated in the Biennale.
– [Olli Andrew] ok but nothing that hasn’t been suggested before.
