The Sails Cabin
The Sails Cabin
The Sails Cabin project is dedicated to creating a haven for skiers in Iceland. Rooted in a desire to seamlessly blend history, culture, and functionality with the natural terrain, this endeavor aims to achieve a harmonious integration. Central to this vision is a concrete mast situated at the heart of the structure, flanked by two expansive concrete slabs reminiscent of boat sails, paying homage to the profound maritime heritage of the Nordic region. This design allows skiers to descend directly towards the lift, facilitating effortless access to the mountain slopes.
The cabin boasts extensive amenities, including a spacious garage for snow trucks, equipment repair area, dining facilities, and a top-floor fireplace lounge offering plush seating and breathtaking sunset vistas.
Drawing upon locally available materials is a key consideration in the project, given Iceland’s isolated island status and the associated high import costs. The primary structures feature concrete construction, while the enclosed main wing showcases glass facades. Suspended modules incorporate a metal framework with cladding options ranging from reclaimed wood to perforated steel strips with internal thermal insulation, complemented by an inner glass membrane.
Heating for the cabin is provided through the utilization of subterranean geothermal sources, enhancing internal warmth and sustainability.
The Sails Cabin project exemplifies a meticulous blend of architectural innovation, cultural reverence, and environmental responsibility, promising an unparalleled retreat experience amidst Iceland’s majestic landscapes.
