As the Waters are withering the Seas are swelling. Water bodies such as rivers and lakes are drying, causing life and agricultural land to wither, while sea levels are increasing and swelling upon civilization. These contradicting actions of nature are the effects of human disruption. This situation is then transformed and visualized by the withering and swelling of flower-like objects inside a pavilion that gradually reacts to humans’ interference (by sitting in the space).
‘Withering Waters, Swelling Seas’ replicates climate change in a smaller scale to experience the bigger picture. How the rising levels of sea and the sinking of Venice grounds is not just a Venice situation but a Global one, or how the withering lands around the world are also related to the melting of the polar ice caps. Near the end of the exhibition the pavilion will be closed from entering, returning the flower-like objects to its blooming state. This experience is not only to show the best solution is not interfering with nature but also to point how behind global warming where humanity is the culprit, nature is not the victim but rather humans become the victims to their own action’s instead.
Jury Comments
– [Hamidreza Khademi] Innovative visualization of climate change effects. The responsive flower-like objects present engineering challenges. High interactivity, but careful design is needed to ensure durability and consistent operation.
– [Olli Andrew] Needs better execution, lacking design vision.
