Our intervention targets dense historical centers (Lisbon in particular) with lack of green wild-life corridors and further challenges of occasional floodings caused by rain, followed by droughts. It responds to the need of climate adaptation through replicable nature-based solutions, but also respects the historical fabric of the city.
We propose a multi-layer bio receptive roof tile, which on the surface level decelerates rainwater and captures seeds and spores, with water storing tanks providing a medium for plants and root structures. The micro-structured cork surface allows pioneer poikilohydric species to grow. This primer ecosystem creates a more stable microclimate suitable for further species to arrive and grow during the entire year, creating a more resilient and permanent habitat.
The tile serves as an element in a bigger living system, where stored rainwater is used for local food production, drinking, cooling, moister regulation etc. We propose three distinct layers: wildly growing roof level for local organisms, the vertical farming area on the facade for food production, and the public green infrastructure for community on street level. The roof layer gives biology full agency to make its processes, without human intervention. Life and form are slowly following the water back to earth.
