‘Cube & Magnet’ challenges the traditional hierarchy of architectural events not only in Biennale. It presents a simple, accessible approach that empowers both designers and the general public to collaboratively shape the installation through the principles of open-source architecture.
At the core of the design is a basic steel cube frame, leveraging the inherent strength and versatility of steel. However, the true design element lies in the magnetic panels that participants can freely attach to the frame. This allows architects, casual visitors, and even children to organically contribute to the evolving installation.
The open-source nature of the design transforms the process into a true co-design experience. As individuals place the magnetic panels, they shape the project’s functionality and aesthetics. A chair for resting, a table for drawing, a shading pavilion, visual openings, ventilation – all emerge from the collective creative input.
By embracing this democratic, participatory approach, the design seeks to make the Venice Architecture Biennale more inclusive and accessible. It blurs the lines between professional and amateur, inviting everyone to engage with the built environment in a meaningful, hands-on way. The open-source ethos empowers all participants to become active co-creators, reshaping the built environment through collaborative design.
Jury Comments
– [Hamidreza Khademi] Excellent in feasibility and interactiveness. Cost-effective and adaptable design using a steel cube frame with magnetic panels. Structurally sound and easily implementable. The interactive aspect allows for continuous evolution, making it highly engaging.
– [Nichola V. Barrington-Leach] Nicely presented and a simple but clear idea.
– [Olli Andrew] furniture products available that do this already not innovative.
