Sailor’s Repose is an explorer’s haven at the edge of the world. It does not impose new programs, rather it aims to be the versatile temporary home base for people who already seek to visit the world’s most remote island. People come to the Antipodes for various reasons; whether to study flora and fauna, do wildlife photography, to write books, memoirs, or just for the thrill of the unknown. What they all have in common is a shared long journey by ship and boat.

Having spent weeks at sea just to get here, visitors are met by three simple buildings elevated above Antipodes’ wild terrain. Like a fishing port village, the repose stands on pier like platforms close to the sea giving a sense of safe footing on the otherwise rugged landscape and provides the safe base for further exploration of the island. Beyond the essential rooms of a shelter, the repose also boasts a sauna for deeper cleansing and a multi-purpose room above the kitchen and dining area. This room of requirement contained under corrugated plastic sheets gives way for activities that require much space and daylight but aren’t feasible outdoors due to the often-extreme conditions on site.
