The theme of this project is to explore design possibilities for the potential return of inhabitants to Chernobyl. Following the nuclear disaster in 1986, Pripyat, located 3.5 kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, was rendered a no-man’s land. In the absence of human activity, the remarkable resilience of nature has allowed the area to be reoccupied by flora and fauna. Considering the desire of local residents to return to their homeland and the idea of repurposing the abandoned city, we propose the design of a series of enclosed, elevated cities that enable coexistence between humans and wildlife without mutual interference.
Firstly, the design repurposes the city’s original public gathering spaces by integrating modular units with varying functions, thereby constructing a core building that serves as a distribution hub for the new city. Secondly, the existing framework of apartment buildings is utilized to insert residential units, accommodating human habitation. These structures are interconnected through a multi-level, piped transportation network. All buildings are elevated to minimize their impact on wildlife. Over time, the enclosed spaces would gradually open, fostering a harmonious integration of humans into the natural environment, thereby facilitating coexistence.
