There are ethnic minorities with distinctive culture living in mountainous areas of China. However some traditional ethnic cultures gradually dissipated with the departure of those who urge to get ahead in cities. The disappearance of cultural phenomenon is due to its incompatibility with the development of modern society. So how could we bring new life to traditional culture?
The Miao nationality living in southwest China, they are good at expressing their respect for nature and ancestors with music, which the original, graceful sound is full of the unique simplicity and sincerity.Nowadays, inheritors of intangible heritage using modern digital technology combined with traditional musical instruments try to innovate in Miao music. Some ethereal sound can be known as a transcendent vehicle that makes the connection between the inner self and the source of eternity. The characteristic tone of Miao music could be the guide of meditation.
The mountainous geography influenced the architectural style of the local people. The building adopts the form of overhanging architecture. The attic is merely used as a storage which could be a reusable soundproof space that finds an acoustic balance between sound absorption and reverberation. The modified structure accommodates natural sounds and integrates them with the music,in where people could rediscover themselves and their inner strength.
Jury Comments
- A proposal that supports the preservation of cultural elements, while offering the individual user a private place to contemplate and meditate. -Olav Bruin
- I like that the project works with a smaller habitat, and that it avoids the big city (a cliché in thinking about meditative space / obvious simplification where the big city is in polarity with silence, nature i.e. phenomena associated with meditation).
