Mars Reefs

Mars reefs hive is a 3rd class Insitu resource utilization (ISRU) space architecture of a 3rd generation, self-sufficient colony (Permanent immigrant’s settlement) reflecting a direct biomimicry interpretation of the coral reefs, One of the most durable ecosystem colonies on earth. Brain coral develops extremely strong skeleton and base. As mentored from nature that the coral structure and formation is difficult to dislodge, so it will endure turbulence, hurricanes, and other existential threats. A new approach in biomimicry was undergone in this project utilizing the shape grammar and rationalization of natural pattern to reproduce and array its modular units with different combinations of elements and explore numerous variations with an engineering approach to shelter various life forms to live in symbiosis while considering factors such as structural stability, aesthetics, and functionality.
Rationalization of nature was done by extracting shape vocabulary and its branching, interconnectedness and repetition rules of assembly to grow and create more complex structures maneuvering any geographical or geological harsh scenario and a biophilic design through the inflatable Mars farming units (MFU) were designed with different design iterations to serve the psychological and physiological crew members needs
