STRATA GROTTO
Status: Second Prize Competition Winner
This dramatic, geology-inspired, stratified and plant-covered Grotto won the second prize for a open-sustainable-idea competition for Beiruts NGO DAR (e). The selected location stands out on Beirut´s “Gateway to the City”. It combines insights in the field of sustainability, geology, health and natural ecology. Inspired by nature and Jeita Grotto in specific – the endemic subterranean Lebanese caves – the qualities of space for this project are derived from the tiny and vast openings found in such landscapes. Additionally, the architectural elements imitate the zebra to create passive air-flow and decrease humidity throughout the structure by advocating low-high pressure zones from direct Mediterenean sunlight.
