5th-Year Thesis Project: Bhar Lazreg Urban Regeneration
Objective: Redefine the urban experience in Bhar Lazreg by addressing pressing issues of instability, insecurity, and neglect through an integrated architectural and urban design approach.
Project Contexte: In this project, our central objective is to rejuvenate the urban landscape of Bhar Lazreg, which has long suffered from instability, insecurity, and neglect, resulting in a negative public perception. Over the past two decades, uncontrolled urbanization characterized by unauthorized constructions has exacerbated these challenges, necessitating a holistic intervention.
Approach: Our approach is firmly grounded in the creation of an inclusive and sustainable urban environment, with a specific focus on empowering local communities. To achieve these objectives and foster a child-friendly urban space that enhances safety and community bonds, we have adopted a participatory approach, primarily engaging children. This approach unfolds in three fundamental stages:
-
Observing Our Neighborhood: We aimed to gain insight into the daily life of the neighborhood from children’s perspectives, understanding their experiences and activities in the area.
-
The Embellished Image of the Neighborhood: In this stage, our objective was to comprehend the place from the viewpoint of children. Children conveyed their perceptions of the neighborhood’s strengths and weaknesses.
-
Reproducing Their Neighborhood: This stage aimed to uncover the children’s aspirations for their neighborhood. Children were encouraged to illustrate their ideal neighborhood as they envision it.
