Challenges: Occasional droughts affecting a small mountain-side village.
Our market design for Bundibugyo addresses drought vulnerability with a comprehensive circular economy system. Taking advantage to the mountainside of village to create a terraced which maximizes space. This innovative design seamlessly incorporates various elements, including fish farming, cellular shops, crop and fruit cultivation, and livestock farming. Drought-resistant crops (Amaranth, Pearl Millet, Sorghum, Aloe Vera, and Banana) thrive here.
The heart of this concept lies in the intricate network of pipes that interconnects the entire circular economy system. Market waste is efficiently collected and directed to an adjacent composting tank, where it combines with animal manure from the third level and nutrient-rich water from the base level. This process yields high-quality compost, enriching the farming practices on the second level. Moreover, the market waste and scraps are repurposed as animal feed, supporting livestock and fish farming within the community.
Notably, the composting tank generates biogas for sustainable electricity, powering the entire market. In essence, our integrated circular concept not only addresses drought susceptibility but also promotes sustainable growth in Bundibugyo. This holistic approach combines efficient resource utilization with eco-friendliness, ensuring long-term resilience for the community.
