Super Loop
Super Loop, a comprehensive cycling promotion initiative centered in Chicago’s Loop area, engages holistic approaches with urban planning, architecture, and product design. It aims to tackle challenges stemming from the district’s outdated infrastructure dating back to 1882. Despite being the second-largest U.S. commercial business district and highly walkable, with 33.3% of residents opting for walking or biking, the Loop grapples with cyclist-unfriendly conditions, leading to approximately 1,400 annual bike crashes across its 280 miles of lanes.
Chicago’s cycling infrastructure, marked by inconsistency and minimal protection width from traffic, leaves cyclists susceptible to accidents. Super Loop proposes an innovative solution, minimizing ground footprint by elevating structures above the Chicago Loop railway and connecting them to adjacent buildings. This physical separation aims to shield cyclists from unclear lanes and potential accidents.
Beyond elevated structures, Super Loop plans to integrate cycling facilities into new and existing buildings. This includes connecting Super Loop Lanes to ground levels, offering bike rentals, vertical storage, and repurposing bike components into furniture, lighting, and decorative art. Super Loop emerges as a versatile project, endeavoring to foster a safe and sustainable cycling lifestyle for Chicago residents.
