Gears Beneath: Machine for Going Forward
Looking at the network of gears rotating beneath your feet, it is impossible to distinguish whether it is just a bicycle or an entire city operating underneath. In this post-industrial society, existing urban landscape have been digested, broken down and transformed into nutrients for the parasitic growth of the cyclist system in the city.
Exacerbating disconnection between urban life and the natural environment, as well as among individuals, has been a lingering nightmare to our contemporary society. Our team, therefore, endeavour to recultivate the sense of connectedness by proposing a module approach for the urban planning. Influenced by the Metabolist thinking, we see the cyclist ideology as a system consists of replicable modules that house different programmes to satisfy the daily needs of the residents:
Residential Blocks, Roads for Commutation, Shops for Bike Maintenance, Racetrack, Parking and Leisure Cycling Zones, etc.
These programme modules are restorative, meaning that they could be replaced and updated easily. This enables the further regeneration of the city to accommodate the cycling activities in the society. To fully utilise the potential of the existing urban landscape, elevators have been introduced to connect the different levels of the city, augmenting the experience for cyclists.
