+ Mark Eum Kim 🇰🇷
Honourable Mention of the Himalayan Thermal Bath
1) Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Hello, I’m MARK EUM KIM, and my name signifies a dazzling sun or a clear day. I work in an office while pursuing a career in architecture as a student. My major is in architectural engineering, and I am consistently developing and nurturing my interest in architectural design.
2) What inspired you for the Himalayan Thermal Bath?
To be candid, I believe my emotions were the primary inspiration for this design. Dealing with the burden of natural elements beyond my control and the psychological elements stemming from the unconscious was a significant challenge. This also involved maintaining a straightforward approach, avoiding any artificial manipulation to make the design appear more intentional. I aimed to incorporate a part of the sky into this design and establish a connection with nature.
3) Can you describe any particular challenges you faced during the design process and how
you overcame them?
The most significant challenge undoubtedly revolved around dealing with natural elements. Nature inherently embodies uncertainty, and integrating design elements into it is an ongoing challenge. The concept of “Vessels of Nature” aimed to portray an intermediary role, allowing us to harmonize with nature using sustainable materials within the vast, uncontrollable landscape. Essentially, I intended for this design to exist seamlessly within the landscape without disturbing it due to the inherent uncertainties in nature.
4) How do you think your educational background or professional experiences influenced your winning design?
I believe that an individual’s unrestrained imagination significantly shapes their life’s trajectory, regardless of their educational background. Designs often encapsulate personal scenes or experiences. I firmly believe that a designer’s sensitivity, combined with rationality, profoundly influences the design process.
5) What advice would you give to students or young professionals looking to excel in architecture competitions?
Architecture demands continuous learning and progression. Isn’t architecture an indispensable subject across various fields, including humanities, literature, science, and art? It’s essential to broaden your scope, always approach situations with an open mind, and incorporate and implement diverse perspectives. In many ways, this advice reflects my personal aspirations and the steps I aim to take.
6) What are your future aspirations in the field of architecture?
I aspire to be an architect characterized by an open mind and a timeless imagination. Someday, I hope to become an architect whose imagination doesn’t age – an imagination that remains fresh and vibrant over time.
